Title: Bur Dubai, painted in 2003 in Dubai, size 113cm x 197cm, price 800 euros

The view from the top of our apartment block, looking north to the docks and the Persian Gulf
This was one of my first oil paintings. Itís painted with commercial enamel house paint. I discovered this was cheaper than artistsí materials. So cheap, I didnít bother to mix colours. For every shade on the picture I just bought another 500ml tin of paint. I worked from a photograph taken through a wide-angle lens.

The figure at the bottom of the picture is probably a Pakistani bachelor, one of many who shared rooms in the apartment blocks you can see. This was, at the time, one of the low-rent areas of Dubai.

There are two other figures in the painting - an Emirati man and woman. Can you see them?
